ONE MIC PROGRAM  [ 2 hr workshop / class ]

Based on a mindfulness theme, Philly D begins with an inspirational dharma talk before taking the class through an invigorating physical practice.  To close the workshop/class, there is a guided meditation.

Dharma Themes You Can Choose From:

    • Dukkha (exploring the positive nature of suffering)
    • Freedom (what holds us back from living awake and fully)
    • Metta  (lovingkindness)
    • Stuck View (exploring ways to open mind, heart & body to get ‘unstuck’)
    • RISE UP Tour - rise up to meet the moments in Your Life
    • Equanimity - creating balance amidst turmoil and great joy

    TWO TURNTABLES PROGRAM

Two Turntables is the ‘extended mix’ of the inspirational vibes, and it goes together with the ‘one mic program’.  It is essentially two separate parts that can put together as a saturday/sunday workshop or one part in the morning, break, and one part in the afternoon.  The two parts:
    1. BE.YOGA (live an inpspired life off the mat) - This is a 3 hour lecture that is far from a lecture.  It is a powerful & inspiring presentation that ignites the spirit.  PhillyD channels is 15 years of professional speaking with his life of yoga and offers of a fun interactive three hours that will open you to new AWARENESS.

    ihhy Frequently Asked Questions

What Is "Inspirational Hip Hop Yoga (ihhy)?"
The focus is Mindfulness Yoga.  To this we connect positive conscious hip hop music.  The music is chosen to reflect the theme.  Example Mindfulness Themes for  ihhy:  Dukkha (suffering), Metta (lovingkindness), Moksha (freedom/liberation), Stuck View (perceptions).

Do I Need To Know How To Dance?
No, No, No.  This class is about yoga and positive vibes.  Don't get me wrong now, we will move and groove.  We will snap & clap, but it's all in good fun!

    2 Hours - Really?
Yes, really.  It's not just a physical practice (asana).  We begin with an Inspirational Mindfulness Talk, then move into the asana practice.  As we go through class, we discuss the messages of the music and how it connects to the theme used.  To close the program I will guide the participants through a Metta Meditation (lovingkindness).  This class is refreshing, uplifting and without a doubt, a fun physical challenge.

How Do I Bring This To My Studio?
I would love to share my programs with your students.  Just email me:  info@ihiphopyoga.com.  From here I can send you package of cost breakdown and ideas on how to market the workshop/class.

    testimonials.

PhillyD’s Inspirational hip hop yoga has totally rocked Waterloo!  The buzz that gets created around this class is truly amazing.  Phil gets students moving, grooving, sweating, smiling, high fiving each other and as a result, walls are let down.  People let go and let be.  They have fun.  After our first two hour hip hop class, people couldn’t stop talking about it or asking when Phil would be coming back.  It’s something you just have to experience.
    Seriously, try it!
    Ashley Keefe
Moksha Yoga Waterloo | Studio Owner

I was quite anxious to meet Phil having heard about him for days. We were all waiting for him, actually. A big man with a big voice and a big heart, his sensitivity and keen awareness of others reverberated through out the room the day he was to give his presentation. I was curious to hear what he would say and I gave him my best ears. Phil tells wonderful stories of despair, hope and change and gives eye witness descriptions of the strength of the human heart and the power of interconnectedness. As a yoga practitioner, I was struck by the pertinence of this. Phil is able to share his vision of love and the possibility of personal change in a way that is accessible to all, encouraging us all to be more in touch with our innocence and the power of our beliefs. As yoga settles the mind, these new ways of being and doing can flourish. On top of that after Phil’s workshop, I got such good hugs from the most surprizing sources, again proof that he has an amazing ability for touching people’s souls and giving them the courage to reach out to others.
    Suzie Veroff, Montreal, QC

Phil puts dreams and actions together, providing real achievable action items to actually make the transition from wishing for a better life to getting to livng a better life.  He does it with so much enthusiasm, and loving energy.  I left feeling like I had tools completely complimentary to my yoga practice, it’s beautiful to find ways of living my practice off the mat.  I loved Phil’s program - and for me - it was the single most powerful presentation with regards to my attitude and actions within my own life, that I heard on our one month Yoga teacher training session.
    Lisa Donovan, Whistler, BC

“Philly D’s amazing presentations touched my life in a time when I was in a major period of transition.  His empathy, kindness, honesty and energy throughout his presentation provided a healthy, inspiring environment which not only made me want to work to better my own life, but gave me tools in how to help enrich the lives of others.   As a yoga teacher, social worker, and aspiring music therapist, I am constantly seeking out ways in which I can empower people to enrich their own experience on this Earth through a variety of modalities.   Philly D’s presentations creates a unique experience for the cohesive group and the individual body.
    Karina Frost, Chicago, IL

“Phil’s presentation far exceeded anything that I have seen before.  His passion, compassion and creativity shined through in his thought-provoking presentation that was uniquely personalized to reach our yoga group. It left me feeling empowered, inspired and motivated, in a comfortable way.”
    Lisa Zawaski, San Diego, CA

Philly D’s talk made me stop and think. What was this inspiration that I felt? Something inside was lending such a soft yet directed purpose to my actions after the talk. I played around with cultivating the feeling through my yoga practice on the mat, and it changed how I expressed and felt in my postures. I found that moving from that place of compassion and direction that his talk had inspired was natural and easy, it quickly began to move off my mat. I had so much more to offer and give and share with the people around me. Thanks Phil for showing that it is possible to tap much more deeply into that inner universal creativity. Everyone around us benefits when we connect more deeply with our own potential.
    John Pattison, Calgary, AB

As I reflect back to the presentation ‘become who you can be’ my heart warms and I feel a sense of joyfulness, reflection and amazement.  I remember my belly hurting from laughter and my tears streaming down my face from the pure emotion that was brought to my awareness.  Phil has a special talent of clearing the path and bringing forth what really matters in life.   Thank you, Phil, for sharing your laughter, honesty and sincerity.
    Karen Dermody, Stouffville, ON

    Breath of Community

    Eagle Pose

Amazing amazing amazing.  Over 600 Winnipeger’s came to rock the  Lyric and bust out a Moksha Yoga Practice.  It was an incredible display of practice, peace and community.  I was fortunate enough to be one of the teachers in a tag-team teaching format.   As I stood on stage and watched 600 people lie silent in Savasana for 5 minutes, I was moved to my core.  The whole experience touched my soul.

Beyond the Yoga, we were treated to an amazing concert as well by two great acts.  Keith & Renee opened us up before we started the class, and they provided a beautiful song called “AMAZING” ( iTunes) for Savasana.   After the class the amazing soul artist FLO took the stage and blew people away with her talent.  Check the iTunes links below to support these amazing indie Canadian artists.

    Rockin’ The New P5′s

What up y’all?  I thought I would drop a review.  I recently picked up some new headphones and I am LOVING LOVING them.  The Bowers & Wilkins new P5′s. They got a little retro feel, but they carry some amazing punch.  The sound is strong, balanced and really clear.  I am hearing all layer on these bad boys.  They are over ears to and seal well, essentially acting as a noise canceller.  Awesome.

A must for me, they got a mic and remote on  the wire.  I can answer calls on my iPhone, start and stop tracks and turn up and down volume.  Get on it people.  If you love your music, make a good investment.

    hip hoppin’ at lulu winnipeg

This past Sunday I taught an Inspirational Hip Hop Yoga Class at our local lululemon store.  It was dynamite energy.  Big crowd, lot’s of laughs and awesome moves from a diverse age range.  I would say we had people from age 10 all the way to age 60.  It’s so cool how yoga & music can bridge generations.  Movement is powerful.

The theme of the class was: FREEDOM

    Here is my Freedom Playlist:

    Queen B.

Great Day today. 41 degrees celsius with the humidex. Spent the day at the Forks supporting my homeboy Kmac and as he was playing for the Queen of England today. Awesome performance by the duo Keith & Renee. They did Winnipeg, and Canada proud today!

Disappointing there were no hip hop acts even considered for this event. Many positive MC’s reppin’ Winnipeg. This would have helped the older audience see the positive side of Hip Hop. Booo, to the organizing committee!

Rise Up – The Mix Tape

I love to play with music.  In our house, we have a little DJ Station set up and this is where my daughter and I do some bonding and grooving.  My daughter emJ is now 15 months, so she loves all the knobs and toggles on the deck.  These mixes are her and I top rockin’ to the beat.  They’re not quality mixes from the standpoint of beat matching. BUT, they are full of love & joy.  The scratching is my daughter doing her thang.  I tell her when and she brings in the next song.  She’s a cute little DYNAMO!  I hope you enjoy the music.  If you are looking to support the individual artists on this mix tape, check my last blog and you’ll find a list of artists!  They are worth supporting and it should be noted that every song on this mix was purchased!

We got interrupted at one point, so the RISE UP MIXTAPE is in two parts.  Deal with it!

    Sold Out

What an AMAZING day today as 50 strong souls repped it hip hop yoga styles today at Moksha Yoga Winnipeg (Donald Studio). There was great energy, lot’s of laughter and we ‘hit it’ to some AMAZING SONGS.

The program I shared today was my new one called RISE UP (meet the moments of your life). From the Mindfulness perspective the Dharma talk  was on ‘impermanence’ and how this leads to a deeper understanding of ‘interdependence.’

My Dharma Talk Covered Three Main Points:

To Rise Up You Have to Wake Up

    • wake up to ‘what is’, not to how you perceive it to be
    • this is mindfulness, know what you’re doing, while you’re doing it
    • things will CHANGE, nothing will remain the same, but you can be present when it does

To Rise Up You Have To STEP UP

    • step up to the moments in your life
    • step up with bravado but don’t forget lovingkindness

When Rising Up – Don’t Forget To Reach Down

    • BE what you love and use what you love to pull others up
    • surround yourself with POSITIVE people (community of intention)
    • step up to what DOESN’t FEEL RIGHT
    • follow your heart, listen to your gut

THE PLAYLIST for RISE UP CLASS

    Papers Please

I got two things for ya:  1.) PE Video, and 2.) a new Talib Kweli track going viral right now.  Both focus on Arizona and it’s wack immigration law that passed recently.  This new immigration law in Arizona is freakin’ scary.  Human Rights out the window ya’ll.  Arizona actually has been this ways for a long time.  Until recently, they were the only state to not recognize Martin Luther King day.  When asked, “why not?”, they always had some wack excuses about ‘tradition.’  Then they wanted to host the Superbowl and the NFL said,”No, because you don’t recognize MLK Day.”  Because there is hundreds of millions to be made from the Superbowl, the changed their stance and now recognize MLK Day.  They’ll change the law, not for reasons of compassion, understanding and human rights, but if you give them some money they’re in!  My favourite group Public Enemy actually did a song  before they changed it called, “By The Time I Get To Arizona.”  It was banned by MTV for being to controversial.  Here is the new video to to the old track.  Spread it!

The other new track to come out on this issue is from my favourite solo artist Talib Kweli.  He created a track called PAPERS PLEASE.

    Rise Up

Today, I am buggin’ out (tribe). My mind is vibin’ on a single question and it’s got me going hard to create a new Inspirational Hip Hop Yoga class! In fact it’s inspired an entire new speech.

It started this morning after my morning meditation. I was up early in Duluth, Minnesota. To allow my daughter and wife to remain asleep, I took my dog Asha for a long walk.
